When to Use Low Gear

Low gear is a driving feature that allows drivers to safely drive down steep hills or long, gradual downward angles, ascend inclines smoothly, or traverse slippery Salem roads and notoriously steep hills and mountians. If you’re wondering how low gear works and why it’s an important element for driving throughout and beyond Portland, read on below. With any other questions related to Mazda performance features or safety technologies, contact our Power Mazda dealership team to learn more.

What is Low Gear?

Low gear refers to a low ratio of vehicle speed to engine speed as it relates to your vehicle. Think of it this way: your engine is working hard but the wheels are moving more slowly than normal. Some vehicles can switch into low gear automatically, while others require a manual downshift. This difference is dependent on your transmission type.

  • Manual transmission: as the name implies, with this transmission type you will have to manually downshift your vehicle into a lower gear before you can proceed down the decline or tackle alternate terrain.
  • Automatic transmission: Automatic transmissions will sense the incline or decline and switch into low gear automatically. If you want to switch into low gear voluntarily under non-descent circumstances, you’ll need to create the conditions to incite a downshift. Do so by easing off the gas pedal slowly. Stay in low gear by continually, lightly braking.

Why is Low Gear Necessary?

First and foremost, low gear exists for safety reasons and to preserve essential parts of your vehicle. When driving down a hill or steep angle, your brakes have to work very hard to fight the forces of gravity so you can maintain a safe and secure speed. Due to this stress on your brakes, they could overheat or fail completely. To circumvent this potential danger to the brakes, low gear uses the engine braking system to take that potential strain off your brakes.
