How Long Do Car Brakes Last?

How long do car brakes last? There are a lot of factors that affect the lifespan of your brakes, including how you drive, where you drive in the Wilsonville area, and the types of brake pads on your vehicle. Power Mazda has written the below guide with some help from our service center experts to help you figure out how many miles you have left on your Mazda brakes. For more information about brakes, you can also check out our “How do brakes work?” guide.

How Many Miles Do Brakes Last?

Estimating how long brake pads last is no easy task. The average brake life is between 25,000 and 65,000 miles, but there’s a considerable 40,000-mile range in play—and some people will have brake pads last beyond 80,000 miles. Your owner’s manual, as always, is king in any maintenance-related questions. Your vehicle’s standard service intervals in your manual take everything from torque calculations to OEM specs into account, but the actual life of your brake pads is going to depend on more than that.

What Affects Brake Pad Life?

Just as your gas mileage will change depending on how and where you drive, brake pad life will change depending on:

  • Driving Habits: Do you have an aggressive driving style? If you’re hard on the brake pedal, your brake pads will be affected. Be kind to your braking system. Try pressing down on your brakes softly, or coast to a stop at lights and stop signs.
  • Environment: Driving in the city means encountering traffic and lights, so you’ll brake more often. Driving on the highway usually means a longer brake life.
  • Brake Material: Carbon-ceramic brakes last longer than standard metal brakes, but they tend to be more expensive. If you don’t already know, look into your brake material.

Signs Your Brake Pads Are Worn

Not certain how many miles are on your brake pads? Need to know when to change your brake pads, or what signs to look out for? Below are a few signs that it’s time to change your brake pads ASAP.

  • If your brakes feel less responsive, it’s probably not in your head. That is likely a sign the pads have worn down and may soon need to be replaced.
  • Do your pads look worn out? You can check by looking through the spaces between your wheel’s spokes. The outside pad should be pressed against a metal rotor while your car is in park. If there’s less than 1/4 of an inch of pad left, it’s time to bring your Mazda to a professional.
  • Are your brakes screeching? Brake pads sometimes have a metal shim called an indicator. The high-pitched sound it emits signal the driver that the brake pads need to be replaced.
  • Rattling sounds can also indicate somethings wrong. If you hear an odd clicking sound, the device meant to hold your pads may be loose.
  • While a loud, shrill sound is a warning, a loud, metallic crunching sound is an indication that you may have worn down your brake pads completely. This grinding sound can damage your rotors. The longer this goes on, the more damage is done, and the higher repair costs are likely to be.

If you notice any of the above signs, we advise you drive your car to the closest Mazda service center as soon as you can.
