The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is one of the lesser known three-row SUVs that combines style and comfort to create a unique driving experience–and a vehicle that some of the major players should be watching carefully.

Why Buy the 2018 Mazda CX-9?

The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is a three-row crossover utility vehicle perfect for families on the go or weekend vacations. The model has been around since 2006 but was completely redesigned as recently as 2016 and has been getting stellar reviews ever since. It’s sporty enough to please parents and road-trippers while also being spacious enough to seat seven, or fold down the third row to fit more luggage or overnight gear.

The beautifully-sculpted exterior is stylish and makes the car look more upscale than its price tag suggests. The front grille and blue headlights convey power while the interior is all about luxury. Inside the cabin, super-soft plastics abound and real rosewood paneling graces the front dash in some trims. The back seat is kid-friendly while adults fit comfortably in the other two rows.

Is the Mazda CX-9 a Good Car?

Yes. It’s a rare thing to find a car that fits the whole family and their stuff but still exudes this much style, with decent fuel economy to boot. The mix of style and practicality are why the CX-9 received the 2017 10 Best Award from Car and Driver magazine.

The CX-9 also bristles with safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, radar cruise control, lane assist and lane departure warning, high beam control, and autonomous emergency braking. Some complain that the CX-9’s safety features are too sensitive, but the factory settings are adjustable. A new perk for CX-9 drivers is that the redesigned CX-9 boasts a smoother, quieter ride since Mazda added a heavy sound-proof layer to the floor plates in the cabin.

How Much Can Mazda CX-9 Tow?

While not the best in its class, the Mazda CX-9 can tow up to 3,500 pounds, not counting any cargo or passengers inside the cabin. That’s enough for conventional loads, such as a small motorboat, a pair of ATVs, or a trailer. The engine on the Mazda CX-9 isn’t as powerful as some in its class, but the torque and handling are impressive and will give you a noticeable burst of speed when weaving through traffic.

Is the Mazda CX-9 a FWD or AWD?

The CX-9 comes as a FWD or AWD vehicle. All-wheel drive gets better traction on the road, so they’re safer in snowy or rainy conditions. Opting for the AWD option should be something to consider if you live in a place that gets harsh winters or you drive up to the mountains on weekends. The trade-off for AWD is. of course, gas mileage. The FWD option gets 22/28 miles per gallon, while the AWD gets just 20/26 mpg. Either way, fuel economy for the Mazda CX-9 is above average for its class.
